Until I saw images of the Yamaha Tesseract, the vehicle I’d been most looking forward to seeing at the Tokyo Motor Show was Toyota’s i-REAL but now Yamaha’s intriguing hybrid four-wheeled motorcycle really has wrested my attention amidst a plethora of other interesting exhibits. Not a great deal of information has been released about the machine, so we’ll have to speculate a little about just what it might be like to ride, and how nimble it might be. It’s really a four-wheel version of the Vespa, Piaggio and Vectrix three-wheelers except the tilting mechanisms (Yamaha has dubbed them “dual-scythe suspension”) are at both ends, so it’s a carving four-wheeler with both front wheels and both rear wheels very close together and although I’m enthralled by the concept in three-wheel form, there’s something about four wheels which makes me think that the transition will be slow when getting out of one corner and into another but that might just be an aging mind - what really does hold promise is two fat and sticky tyres at each end and the G-forces that might be generated with this machine under cornering. One also wonders just how far the tilting mechanism will allow it to tilt? Given that more than 50 degrees of lean is possible on two wheels with tyres these days, my brain cell is really struggling to picture what will happen when you run out of lean angle. http://yamaha-vixion.blogspot.com/. t’s probably some variation along the four-wheel drift theme and although there looks to be lots of traction available, thinking about the possibilities of getting it rubber-side-up looks frightfully expensive. There is also a dual arm-lock system that keeps the machine upright when at rest without a stand.

Of course we’re being critical here because we’re still coming to grips with what is really a new class of four-wheel machine. On the surface it offers motorcycle performance, maneuverability and frugality with a machine width roughly equivalent to that of a two-wheeler but four wheels worth of traction and road-holding. Bonus - this is a new and potent form of recreational machine and we cannot wait!

Inspired by Biomechatronics and called the Deus Ex Machina, Loniak’s concept is an electric vertically parking motorcycle controlled by 36 pneumatic muscles with 2 linear actuators.

The Deus Ex Machina remains in the concept stage, but it’s expected to go from zero to 60 in three seconds and achieve a top speed of 75mph. It has an incorporated helmet, but no storage space. The single motor is contained in the central wheel and, fortunate for the environment, runs off of nano-phosphate batteries similar to those in hybrid cars.

What would a Yamaha MT-04 250cc flat tracker look like? Oberdan Bezzi, who keeps turning out loads of very cool sketches, thought it might be an opportunity for Yamaha to open up a segment of the market with something other than a scooter or the usual small displacement motorcycles you see throughout much of the world. He thought if Yamaha built a V-Twin like this it might appeal to the riders looking for something that stands out from the crowd.

He has a more standard sketch for his MT-04 idea but this flat track concept, aimed at the U.S., caught my eye. Think about the large base of new riders looking for a way to get comfortable on a motorcycle but having a problem finding a small displacement bike that looks good. In my mind, this would solve that problem quite nicely. In fact, something this nice might do away with the need to move up too quickly because the rider wanted to get off of his “beginner bike” and give him or her an opportunity to really learn how to ride. Nice idea!

The latest Ferrari motorcycle is still in the concept drawing stage and most likely, that is as far as it will ever get, but from an appearance and technology standpoint, it certainly looks like something the Ferrari factory could get behind.

UPDATE: A comment below by Mark notes Ferrari does not want their name attached to this motorcycle concept and told Amir to take it down from his site so I guess we’ll just call this a motorcycle concept based on an unknown company of Italian origin.Past “Ferrari Motorcycles” were usually theme choppers painted red with a Ferrari logo on the tank, though, Andreas Georgeades built at least one and according to some reports as many as three, actual motorcycles with engines from a Ferrari 308, making for an interesting bike and quite an eyeful with the transverse engine and exposed cam drive.

But what we have here, are concept drawings by Amir Glinik, who started with some Italian V12 pared down to V4 configuration and then slowly built up into the finished design. A lot of thought went into every aspect, including the multifunction hand controls modeled after the F16 throttle quadrant. Those controls, though, would have to be learned much like an F16 pilot learns to use his controls without thinking about it. Pausing to figure out what button or switch does what would be less than ideal.

Air intakes on the sides of the bodywork are active, varying the fin position to regulate and accelerate air flow as needed and even momentarily closing when high speed braking makes use of the extra drag.

The touch screen and information center on top of the motorcycle displays everything the rider needs to know as well as controlling suspension and drive modes, GPS and anti theft system.

Individual components were designed with cues from some Italian automobiles and the overall design is certainly unique.

This is a very impressive design concept that would look great if it was ever actually built. I love the look of the engine and how everything grows from it, sort of like a motorcycle seed.
